Our Story

As King City, Oregon grew from its roots as a 55+ retirement community, the city expanded westward and younger families moved in, creating two distinct communities. In order to bridge this divide, the King City Community Foundation emerged with the mission of creating cohesion among all residents within the city.
Our flagship event, The 4th of July Walk & Roll Parade and Festival joins our city in a day of celebration. Throughout the year, we host additional community events including our Halloween Parade and Trunk & Treat, Public Servant Thank You Card Drives and the annual Mayor's Golf Tournament.
KING CITY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HISTORY

As King City, Oregon grew from its traditional roots as a 55+ retirement community, the city expanded westward and younger families moved in, creating two distinct communities. In order to bridge this divide, the King City Community Foundation emerged with the mission of creating cohesion among all residents within the city. Our founding members were Jaimie Fender, Veva Goehler, Maiya Martin Burbank, Micah Paulsen and Annie Paulsen. Ms. Burbank later left the Foundation and we welcomed Jessica Poehler as a board member. The King City Community Foundation was incorporated May 15, 2017, qualifying as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the US Internal Revenue Service.

The first event created to connect the divergent neighborhoods of King City was the 2017 4th of July Walk & Roll Parade and Festival. Both communities already had established small neighborhood parades and the Foundation sought to merge the parades together and create one unified event.  The vision was for a larger parade that would wind through the city and end at the city park followed by a community festival. Kicking off the day’s events was a classic car rally near City Hall followed by a parade that was led by a fire truck from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. The Grand Dames of the parade were two centenarians from King City Senior Living who road through town in a classic convertible. About 300 parade participants wound through the city streets in full red, white and blue regalia.

At the King City Community Park, over 1000 festival goers enjoyed local food brought to us by Koi Fusion, A&W and Taco King while rocking along to the Tone Brothers band.  Vendors, including the Bull Mountain Farmers Market, purveyors of home wares, jewelry and clothing, had ample opportunities to connect to customers. Kids enjoyed the bounce house, face painter and balloon station. It was a wonderful family oriented festival. Many vendors from the 1st Annual Festival eagerly signed up to return in 2018. Founding sponsors of the event included the City of King City, Edgewater HOA and Ken Miller and Associates.

The 2018 4th of July Walk & Roll Parade and Festival was a roaring success with an increase in vendors to 75 with 400 parade attendees and 2000 festival goers. The Randy Morrison Band provided musical entertainment while vendors lined the central greenspace of the park. Kids bounced in the two giant castles after getting their faces painted and enjoying the many kettle corn flavors, churros, cotton candy and other treats. Koi Fusion and Taco King again provided delicious food to fill our bellies. We proudly awarded prizes to three kids who decked out their bikes, trikes and wagons in red, white and blue sparkle. Prizes were generously donated by Piccolo Mondo Toys and MudPuddle Toys and Books. Sponsorship was again provided by the City of King City, Edgewater HOA and Ken Miller and Associates and we welcomed new sponsorship by Columbia Bank, the King City Civic Association and Metropolitan Land Group. Starbucks and Expressions Printing contributed donated product to help make the event a success.

Other endeavors hosted by the KCCF included showing our community’s heartfelt appreciation for the hard work done by the local fire departments by promoting a 2017 Fire Fighter Thank You Card Drive in which we collected about 500 cards that were given to the local Tualatin Valley Fire Department to be shared throughout the stations. Kids got front row views of the fire trucks as we enjoyed pies from Shari’s Café and Pies.

In 2018, we held a summer long King City Police Thank You Card Drive along with our “Give KCPD a Break...Room” campaign to raise funds to help furnish the officer break room in the newly renovated City Hall of King City. The drive was a major success as we collected roughly 250 thank you cards which were presented at a luncheon for the King City Police Department.

The Halloween Trunk & Treat Dress Rehearsal in 2017, held the Saturday afternoon prior to Halloween at King City Senior Village, brought our youth to our senior citizens for snacks, games and an afternoon of fun. In 2018, we hosted a Halloween parade through the Edgewater neighborhood down to the King City Community Park.

The 1st Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament on April 29, 2018 at the King City Golf Course brought King City Mayor Ken Gibson, Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle, Tigard Mayor John L. Cook, Durham Mayor Gery Shirado and Cottage Grove Mayor Jeff Gowing together to go head to head with community members and business leaders in a Nine Hole Golf Scramble. We had a smashing turn out with about 100 golfers.

In March 2019, we partnered with a neighbor, David Nicoli, in bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to King City. With very little advertising, enrollment soared and kids eagerly awaited their very first book, the Little Engine that Could.
